String School is an app platform for web, mobile, and desktop centered around guitar students, self-guided players, and private music teachers. The app combines standalone practice tools with a more guided learning path, so users can either jump straight into tools like the fretboard, tuner, and tab player, or follow structured lessons, games, quizzes, and ear-training activities.
The feature set is organized around access tiers: Free gives students a starting point, Pro unlocks the main self-study tools, Pro + Learn adds the guided curriculum features, Lifetime is a one-time purchase for current and future individual features, and Studio is built for teachers managing students, scheduling, billing, and progress.
- Practice tools include an interactive virtual fretboard with visual customization, scale and chord detection, reusable chord/scale/interval diagrams, and a built-in tuner with support for more advanced tuning modes in paid tiers.
- Song study features include a Song Maps editor for breaking a full song into sections, tracking progress one part at a time, and keeping students focused on the next useful practice target.
- The tab player supports Guitar Pro files with synced audio playback, notation views, track controls, and practice-friendly display tools for learning songs more independently.
- Learn features add structured skill paths, lessons, fretboard and note-reading games, quizzes, and ear-training challenges for students who want a more guided experience than a toolbox alone can provide.
- Practice logging and progress tracking help students keep their work organized across skills, songs, goals, and lesson assignments.
- Studio features extend the platform for teachers with student access management, scheduling, recurring lesson organization, invoicing, and Amplify: a studio-scoped social media platform where students can share their progress and wins with their studio, family, or just their teacher in a safe, controlled environment.
This project is the largest product I have built so far, and it has pushed me across a wide range of engineering problems: cross-platform product design, media playback, music-specific data modeling, authentication, payments, teacher/student permissions, scheduled jobs, email workflows, and database-backed progress tracking.
